S65 Review

Written by Team Oasis at 10:16 15/8-2023

There is a reason the season 65 review has taken some time. It has been a rather dull season with very few nice things to look back to. In the end that is visible also in the ranking, where we dropped some places and lost points.

Part of the reason is that we skipped TF in the CL classics so we had no goals in the first part of the season. Douglas Andren did well with a 3rd and a 4th but you know beforehand that a win is out of the question. The disappointment of season 64 made us not make the effort again. Rest of Andren's season was mediocre. Frequent offdays and/or issues made that the CL squad wasn't performing as well.

Since the classics were not a real goal, the attention moved to smaller side goals like Drozd Cup and Nairobi - Mount Kenya race for instance. Ian Vangale combined both in 1 TF run and it was not good. Nairobi he came 2nd (our 5th 2nd place there) but he dropped the ball in Drozd, finishing only 8th in the GC and socring no result in the DH stage.

In such a dull season you can be a bit opportunistic so we attemped to sneak ourselves into a YC result at Germany Tour with newly acquired Mugeta Mugeni. The start was decent but unsurprisingly he messed it up in the TT, where he could make no error. Our opportunism also took us to the Vuelta without TF with our CL squad in support of Vadimas Blekevicius. No expectations whatsoever for this run. After 5 stages, with 3 results, Vadimas was going into the TT as the leader in the GC. That was rather sweet even though he lost quite some places in the TT.

The big event however i have not mentioned yet. Vadimas Blekevicius was prepared to rise to the throne at the World Championships in Portugal. The route suited him perfectly, even though there are a few competitors out there that are even better at CL races that both require HL as TQ skills. The squad came in strong and well-prepared. That in combination with our captain could or should be a winning combination, however it was not ment to be. Vadimas felt his legs during the day and could not follow Chomutov's captain who benefitted from this. So another attempt a the much desired WC-jersey wasted.
